There were no reviews of this house before we booked, but we went ahead anyway because the location was good. The house turned out to be a real gem–modern, well equipped, and the area is amazing. There are 3 floors to the house: kitchen and dining on ground floor, living room with convertible sofa/double bed, TV and bathroom on second, queen (king?) bed plus bathroom with shower on third (also a TV or monitor?). The kitchen is very well equipped: stove & cooktop, microwave/grill, coffee makers, dishes, etc, PLUS a washing machine & ironing equipment. In short, everything we needed for our long-ish stay. There is also air condition on both upper floors, the ground floor remained cool. We were there with our 6 year old, but the house can easily accommodate 4 — parents & 2, or 2 couples (though there are no doors between the upper floors). Probably not recommended for toddlers. There are thick wooden shutters, insect screen, and heavy glazing — but actually the area is very quiet, but for the occasional bell chiming from the nearby churches. Best about the place is the neighborhood. The house is 5 minutes from the church of Agios Nikolaos in the memorable Splantzia square (now called 1821 square). This is an amazing spot in the city — a large cool space under dense foliage, surrounded by cafes and a fantastic bakery at the corner. During the day, pensioners and locals meet under the shade of the trees, and at night, the space fills up with diners, local as well as visiting. Opposite the bakery is a small church converted into a gallery — see it for the Roman ruins below the glass floor… Do plan to stay over a Saturday and visit the weekly market on Minoos street. We’ve lived in Rome, Paris, and Aix-en-Provence, where there are remarkable markets, but I’ve never seen such fresh produce as here… And then there’s the great fish… We didn’t want to spend our vacation cooking and cleaning, but were sorely tempted… The house is about 8-10 minute walk from the old port — I recommend walking through the fabric on the eastern side of 1821 square. We found Chania remarkable for the persistence of old fabrics into the present, and this area is a great example of this. Most marvelous to walk through at night. Theodor, who received us, was extremely helpful, kind, and generous. He is also a font of information. We are serious foodies, and every suggestion he made turned out to be great. Theodor can also guide you to the best beaches and suggest good short driving tours in the area. In short, we had a most memorable stay, thanks to this little house. It is a gem of a place in a fabric where there are still residents — far from the crazy hard-sell on the west side of the old town.
Great house, lovely for the whole week. This place was situated right in the middle of the old town in Chania which was absolutely beautiful ! Walking distance to amazing restaurants and bars as well. Theo and Stamatis were both excellent hosts and gave us great recommendations of where to go and what to enjoy in Chania. The house was beautiful, 3 storeys of pure excellence on a very quiet street as well. The whole house was lovely and modern and I would definitely recommend it to anyone going to Crete !
